A usual course of conversation in the absence of anything to talk about is to discuss the weather. This blog website is no stranger to that, thanks in no small part to writer's block. Living in the UK nevertheless imposes certain limitations on the topic. For much of the year, we don't really have a lot of we… Read more »
The other day it snowed. I knew this because I looked out of the window and saw snow falling out of the sky. In case I wasn’t sure, however, I had Facebook to confirm it. I don't log on to Facebook very often, but for whatever reason, I was inclined to do so that day. Amongst the usual banality that would nor… Read more »
It comes to something when all I can think to write about is the weather. It is especially sad given that I live in a country that has so little of it. As I've mentioned on countless occasions, the weather in Britain tends to go through varying degrees of mild. It can get warmer. It can get colder. It can be… Read more »
At the first sign of sun, the sunglasses are on, the coats are left at home and the barbeque is fired up at the weekend. This is how Britain works. Spring started a week or so ago and, perhaps more through coincidence than timing, a spell of good weather arrived with it. A week or so before that, the weather… Read more »
It's cold at work. It often is. In the summer months, it's not so bad. Having windows along one side of the building lets the sun in, sometimes achieving something bordering on pleasant. But between the tail end of autumn and the onset of spring, the office is like a fridge. It does have heating, but it's tem… Read more »
It's autumn. Until the last few days one wouldn't have known that. The nights have been drawing in for a while, but the weather has been bizarre. The start of October saw the kind of temperatures July should have delivered but didn't. This unseasonable (and perhaps un-British) bout of warm weather brought man… Read more »
And another arbitrary time on which to stop the weather maps. I rarely watch television at all, but when I do, I usually watch the news. It's what happens to be on while I'm eating, which is about the only time I spend in the living room where the television is. But I digress. A section of the programme is al… Read more »
Dear rain,
I was under the impression that we had come to some kind of accord. For my part I would complain and say horrid things about the sun during the summer months. In return, you would leave me largely free of your watery wrath throughout autumn and winter. It would appear, however, that you have reneg… Read more »
It's cold. It's been cold for months. At the time of writing, we're at the end of winter, so the fact that it's been cold for months shouldn't be a big surprise. In this country, winter is several months of cold, with mild bookends. Any time the weather here does anything that isn't mediocre, it's headline ne… Read more »
In a shocking turn of events, this week water froze in the sky and fell, somewhat unenthusiastically, towards the ground. What followed across the country was complete anarchy. And I'm afraid I watched it all with a raised eyebrow and the occasional unsympathetic chortle.
I do appreciate that snow isn't some… Read more »
